Ask the Coach

Do you train clients who are not interested in a running program or competing in races?
Absolutely! Although a significant aspect of Harvell Fitness Training is on running, Samuel also train clients who want to lose weight, have better definition in their arms and legs, improve the core abdominal area, and attain an overall “new look” for their body. Training is geared toward training “body-specific” areas through a variety of fun workouts tailored to your workout needs.

What is the age range of clients you train?
In 2007 Samuel’s youngest client was 11 and his oldest was 52. Samuel believes that you can always improve your conditioning and fitness, whether you want to maintain a healthy body or set goals for competing in athletic events. As we get older it is especially important to live a healthy lifestyle that includes some kind of exercise program. Of course, aging is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on exercising simply because we are older. Being healthy and fit, regardless of age, is a precious gift that makes life worth living.

How do you determine my fitness goals?
Helping you accomplish your fitness goals is very important to Samuel. In every phone interview Samuel wants to get a clear idea of your fitness level so that he can plan the initial phase of your workout program. Regardless of your fitness level, Samuel’s main priority is to set goals that will help you achieve the body you want, while also improving your overall fitness and conditioning.

How much time will it take for me to accomplish my goals?
Samuel has clients who have trained with him for 4 years, and he also has clients who have trained with him for only 4 months. It all depends on what you want to do. Training and competing in running and other endurance events is a year round activity, so many of Samuel’s clients stay with him because they want to train at a level that prepares them for competitive events. However, Samuel also trains non-competitive clients for brief periods of 4 months or less, many of whom accomplish their goals of losing weight or attaining a “new look” for their body.

What if I want to train with a friend, spouse, or partner?
That’s fine. Your payment can be pro-rated, so that you can pay less than if you were two separate clients. This is a great way for you to save money while enjoying the company of a training partner during workouts with Samuel.

If I want you to pace with me in a marathon, what are your travel limitations?
If your goal is to run a marathon in the San Francisco Bay Area, your cost will be the fee to run the race with you. However, if you plan to run a marathon outside of the San Francisco Bay Area or internationally, (see Personal Pacing Partner program under Programs and Rates) additional rates would apply for travel and hotel expenses. Samuel will train you for the marathon, construct a goal-specific pacing strategy, and run the entire 26.2 mile distance with you. The same also applies for shorter distance races.

Why do I need a weekly training schedule?
A training schedule is a guide to help you understand what kinds of workouts are appropriate for your training program. This involves knowing when to take days off for recovery, specific workouts leading to a goal race distance, or comparing your progress from week-to-week or month-to-month.

What times do you meet clients for training sessions?
Samuel’s earliest morning time (Monday through Friday) starts at 6:00 a.m. and go until he sees his last client at 10:00 a.m. Evening sessions (Monday through Friday) start at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday morning sessions are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Time slots and workout days will be determined once you have committed to your chosen program.

My son and daughter both run track in high school and need someone to help them stay fit during the summer. What is your availability?
Samuel trains high school students for general fitness and those who compete in sports such as tennis, cross-country, and track. He can arrange a program that focuses on maintaining fitness and conditioning, so that your son or daughter can return to school in great shape and ready to train for their prospective sport.

Can I contact you if I have a question that’s not on your website?
Yes, Samuel welcomes all questions and he will answer you as soon as possible. Please refer to his contact information on this site.
